The President of Maytag Appliances said he expects industry-wide sales of appliances to top last year’s levels, making 2004 another record year for the industry.

At a kitchen and bath trade show in Chicago on Friday, Bill Beer said first quarter industry sales have been “considerably stronger than we expected,” Reuters reported late Friday and which was confirmed by a Maytag spokesperson on Monday.

Beer said Maytag saw industry sales growth in the low double-digit range during the first quarter, Reuters reported. He said while he did not foresee continued growth at that rate, “my projection is it will undoubtedly be another record year for the major appliance industry.”

“To see (sales rise) closer to mid-single digits might certainly be doable,” Beer was quoted by Reuters.

Beer made the same projection during an interview with the Daily News in February.

Beer said at the industry show that Maytag is seeing growth in market share following the launch of several new products, including the $1,200 Neptune drying center, which combines a tumble dryer on the bottom with a top compartment where clothes can be hung or laid flat.
