Recalled Maytag production workers walked out of the plant to join striking union members on the picket lines today.

More than 450 workers on layoff were notified by the company late last week that they were being recalled to work at the Newton production plant, which was idled nearly two weeks ago after union members walked off the job after failing to reach a contract agreement with the company.

The recalled workers reported to the plant at 6 a.m. and stayed inside for nearly two hours before walking out en masse shortly before 8 a.m.

The action by the recalled workers now brings to nearly 2,000 the number of production workers on strike in Newton. There are approximately 250 production workers still on layoff status.

Contract talks between Maytag and UAW Local 997 broke off on June 10 after two contract extensions. Major issues remain concerning health care benefits and pension funds.

Later today, Maytag negotiators and union representatives will meet in Chicago with representatives of the Federal Mediation and Concilliation Service. The groups will meet again on Thursday. Union officials said the purpose of the meeting is to set up a meeting date where both sides can discuss contract sticking points with the mediators.
