To the Editor:

On behalf of the membership of United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 898, the support staff union at the Newton Community School District, I am writing this letter in support of the striking members of UAW Local 997.

While it is universally understood that no one wants a work stoppage, such action is sometimes unavoidable. In the midst of the current conflict between UAW Local 997 and the Maytag Corporation, it is important for everyone who is not directly involved in the dispute to remember that it’s the members of UAW Local 997 who are the union. They know what is in their best interest and what is acceptable or unacceptable. They are our neighbors, friends and family. They control their labor and the decision to take a stand.

While we all are affected by a global marketplace for both better and worse, it’s important that communities like ours support our neighbors, friends and families who have worked so hard to build a firm economic base and community foundation. Thus, we, UE Local 898, fully and wholeheartedly, support our union brothers and sisters of UAW Local 997 and their struggle for economic fairness and respect. Their fight for affordable health insurance, decent pensions and a middle class standard of living is our fight!

To all of the faithful salaried workers that have been “walked out” and have no organized representation, our hearts and prayers are with all of you. We are hopeful that the future will bring you employment, prosperity and happiness.

Michael L. Hansen

President

UE Local 898
