MIDDLE AMANA (AP) — Some production workers at the Amana Refrigeration plant are facing layoffs less than a week after they ratified a new three-year contract with plant owner Maytag Corp.

“It’s an adjustment in production schedules driven by seasonality,” Maytag spokeswoman Lynne Dragomier said.

Maytag is offering workers the opportunity to sign up for voluntary layoffs, hoping to reduce or eliminate the need for any forced layoffs, she said.

Voluntary layoffs allow workers to offer to take time off instead of following a formula requiring recently hired workers to be laid off first, Dragomier said.

Maytag officials would not say how many positions will be affected.

The new contract provided for wage increases totaling $1.25 over the term of the contract and improved retirement benefits.

It also allows the company to initiate four-day, 10-hour work weeks and three-day, 12-hour weekend work schedules.

About 2,300 employees are represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 1526.
