To the Editor:

As a former Maytag employee, I have found it hard to not react to the news that has been generated from the corporate offices located in Newton.

After Tuesday’s announcement, I can no longer sit in silence. In the not too distant future, the current generation of American CEOs will meet their timely demise.

I can envision them panting and puffing, dragging their sacks of ill-begotten gold up to the gates of heaven. As was stated in the Bible, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24). Imagine standing there as St. Peter turns them away from the kingdom of heaven and they wearily shake their heads and wonder if it was all really worth it.

We have all witnessed a handful of individuals drive a once proud and prosperous company slowly into a shadow of what it once was. As profits and market share dropped, they continued to award themselves handsome bonuses and salaries.

The Maytag employees left in Newton should hold their heads high, for you have served your fellow employees well.

To the members of upper management that have participated in the legalized thievery from our community and company, we can only continue to pray for your souls because your conscience is definitely beyond repair!
